Recently I was doing some lighting tests, specifically related to the transition from lightness to darkness. I wanted to see the exact effect of having a quick and smooth transition, and the perception that each type of transition conveys.

This effect is mainly relevant in metal objects where it is intended to show its shape (it’s especially important if the object isn’t flat) but also the characteristics of its material.

Among the various images created, I particularly liked this one of the tip of a fountain pen, where one can perfectly see its curved shape as well as the metallic nature of the tip and body.
